Truancy

Washington State Law requires that children between the age of 8 and 18 attend school regularly (if the child is between the ages of 6-8 and enrolled in school, the law applies).  You are in violation of the Washington State Truancy Law if one or more of the following is true:

  • if a student has five (5) or more unexcused absenses in one month; or

  • if a student has ten (10) or more unexcused absences in one year.

If you are in violation of the Washington State Truancy Law a truancy petition can be filed. If a petition is entered against the parent and the student continues to miss school then the court may find the parent in contempt.

1.  A parent may be fined $25.00 per day for each unexcused absence.

2.  Community service hours may be ordered.

 

If a petition is filed against the student and the student continues to miss school the court may find the student in contempt and order:

1.  Informational classes

2.  School-based tutoring

3.  Community Service Hours

4.  Work Crew

5.  Detention

Importance Notice

The Court will be closed for Presidents' Day on Monday, February 20, 2017.

 

Judicial Spring Conference will be Monday, April 24 through Wednesday April 26, 2017.  No trials will be scheduled the entire week.
